Scope and Content West Wing and 'Secret' Chapel of the Roman Camp Hotel, Callander, Perthshire, from the north-east The Roman Camp Hotel, dating, in part, from c.1625, became the country retreat of Lord Esher in the late 19th century. This photograph of the garden and west wing of the house was taken in 1911 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The house and garden stand in an idyllic setting on the banks of the River Teith. The single-storeyed west wing, dating from c.1765, was remodelled in the early 20th century when a 'secret' chapel within a circular conical-roofed tower was added. Much of the appeal of the house derives from an early 20th-century remodelling by Reginald, Viscount of Esher, who was secretary to King George V. Lord Esher, a celebrated book collector, embellished the house with fragments gathered from various places. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
