Scope and Content View from north of The Roman Camp Hotel, Callander, Perthshire The Roman Camp Hotel, built in c.1625 as a hunting lodge, became the property of Lord Esher in the late 19th century. This photograph of the north side of the house and the old walled garden was taken in 1911 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This charming, rambling harled house stands in a picturesque setting on the banks of the River Teith. The main two-storeyed block (right) was extensively remodelled in c.1840 when the circular conical-roofed towers were added on the north and east sides. Harry Bedford Lemere (1864-1944) was an architectural photographer, working under commission for private owners, architects, illustrated magazines and interior decorators. At the peak of his career, 1890-1914, he was taking over 1,000 photographs a year. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
