Scope and Content Garden and river at the Roman Camp Hotel, Callander, Perthshire The Roman Camp Hotel, dating, in part, from the 17th century, stands in an idyllic setting on the banks of the River Teith at Callander. This view of the riverbank was taken in 1911 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The garden grounds, covering 20 acres of woodland, lawn and walled garden, sweep down to a woodland walk along the riverbank. The River Teith, which flows round the garden in a north-west to south-east direction, was used for fly-fishing and boating. The Roman Camp Hotel, built in the 17th century as a hunting lodge for the Dukes of Perth, became, in c.1897, the favourite country retreat of Lord Esher who extensively remodelled and embellished the house. In 1939 it was sold for development as a hotel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
