Scope and Content Smoking Room, The George Hotel, Nos 235-45 Buchanan Street, Glasgow The George Hotel was designed in 1907 by the Glasgow architect, Neil Duff, as a remodelling of part of the Clelland Testimonial Building that stood on the site. The interior was photographed in 1910 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The smoking room was modelled from smaller Victorian rooms. The arcaded vestibule screen has richly applied decoration, and an elaborate frieze, possibly in Lincrusta or some similar material. The furniture and stained glass behind the bar are Edwardian. The Clelland Testimonial Building, a large tenement by David and James Hamilton that bows round the corner into Sauchiehall Street, was erected in 1835-6 as a public tribute to James Clelland, the city's Superintendent of Public Works who died in 1834.
