Scope and Content Smoking Room, The George Hotel, Nos 235-45 Buchanan Street, Glasgow The smoking room of the George Hotel was photographed in 1910 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The hotel was designed in 1907 by the Glasgow architect, Neil Duff, in part of an existing Victorian building on the site. The smoking room retains the original Victorian ceiling decoration, but the elaborate frieze is Edwardian. The bay window, with its stained glass and electric pendant light, is also typically Edwardian, as are the antimacassars on the chairs. The George Hotel was mainly a business-man's hotel, and the smoking room would have been a popular and lively place. The antimacassars over the backs of the chairs were designed to protect the material from the oil used as a dressing in gentlemen's hair. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
