Scope and Content Writing Room, The George Hotel, Nos 235-45 Buchanan Street, Glasgow This photograph of the writing room of the George Hotel was taken in 1910 by Harry Bedford Lemere, one of the leading architectural photographers of his day. The hotel was remodelled in 1907 from part of a Victorian tenement dating from 1835-6. The presence of the piano suggests the writing room may have also been used on more social occasions. The fireplace and cornice are Victorian, but the frieze, possibly Tynecastle canvas or some other embossed material, is Edwardian. The Tynecastle Company was well known for its plaster-like embossed canvas friezes and enrichments. Other popular embossed papers included Anaglypta and Lincrusta, often designed with Classical and Georgian forms or delicate Adamesque swags. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
