Scope and Content Detail of the encaustic tiled floor in the entrance hall of Devanha House, Nos 12-14 Devanha Gardens, Aberdeen Devanha House was built in 1813, probably for William Black of the Devanha Brewery. It was extended for the Blaikie ship-building family in 1840 by the architect Archibald Simpson (1790-1847). The interior of the house is ornately decorated. This photograph shows the fine encaustic Minton/Hollins style tiles in the entrance hall. These richly patterned tiles are arranged in geometric designs, and include rosettes, twisted scrolls, bound garlands of leaves and anthemion motifs. Encaustic tiles are produced by pressing designs into wet clay and filling these depressions with coloured clays before firing. Thus the design is very hard-wearing. The process was originally developed by Cistercian monks in 12th-century England. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
