Scope and Content Auditorium, the New Picture House, No 56 Princes Street, Edinburgh The New Picture House, Princes Street, was opened by Provincial Cinematographic Theatres in 1913 to provide 'a refined form of entertainment' for Edinburgh. This photograph of the auditorium was taken in 1914 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The auditorium had a heavily coffered ceiling and an elaborate cornice with roundels at the corners. It could seat a capacity audience of almost 1,000 patrons, but one of its main attractions was its large orchestra which accompanied the silent films. Provincial Cinematographic Theatres opened two cinemas in Princes Street before World War I with a policy of providing 'refined' cinemas for the public. These tended to be small by later standards but had 'refinements' such as tea rooms and an orchestra. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
