Scope and Content Tea Room, the New Picture House, No 56 Princes Street, Edinburgh The New Picture House, Princes Street, opened in 1913 as a cinema complex within the lower floors of a hotel on the site. This view of one of its two tea rooms was taken in 1914 by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The tea room, designed in the style of an elegant drawing room, had a plasterwork ceiling and Ionic pilasters lining the walls. The tables, with their crisp white tablecloths, are shown here set for tea with a cake-stand (left) at floor level. The New Picture House opened with the intention of offering 'a refined form of entertainment' to the public. The auditorium seated almost 1,000 patrons, and had the added 'refinement' of two tea rooms, a café and a large cinema orchestra. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
