Scope and Content Circuit Room, the New Picture House, No 56 Princes Street, Edinburgh This photograph of the circuit room in the New Picture House, Princes Street, was taken in 1914 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The cinema complex, designed by the architectural firm, Atkinson & Alexander, opened in 1913. The circuit room controlled the electrical power supply to the auditorium, as well as the cinema's two tea rooms and café. The four large boxes and leads (left) supplied the four film projectors in the projection room. In 1914 an average picture show included three or four short 'silent' films interspersed with interest films, and ran for 90 minutes. In 1929 the cinema scooped the first Edinburgh 'talkie' when it showed 'The Singing Fool' starring Al Jolson. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
