Scope and Content View from east of Ruthven House, No 10 Crathie Gardens West, Aberdeen Ruthven House, an unusual Victorian villa, was built c.1865. It is a two-storeyed villa with attic in the Colonial style. The house has full-height canted windows, canted dormer windows above, latticed balustrades and a grey slate roof. This photograph shows the impressive frontage of the villa, with its bay windows and wooden latticed balustrades forming balconies on the first floor and attic. The panelled door has stained glass panels, and further leaded glass panels on each side. This villa has pavilion wings, which replace earlier additions. The house is harled and painted in a variety of colours to pick out the design details. Victorian villas are often found in the wealthy suburbs of large cities, and vary greatly in design.
