Scope and Content Kiosk, the New Picture House, No 56 Princes Street, Edinburgh The New Picture House, owned by Provincial Cinematographic Theatres, opened in 1913 as one of Edinburgh's 'refined' cinemas, and built as a complex on several floors. The interior was photographed in 1914 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The kiosk, in the foyer of the cinema, was constructed in white marble, and flanked by elaborate electric lights with glass bowl shades. The ceiling above is domed, and decorated with the Greek key-pattern motif. The New Picture House, constructed from the banqueting hall of a hotel which existed on the site, was designed as a 'respectable' picture theatre. It was opened by Lady Piggott Redford on 21st October 1913, and could seat almost 1,000 patrons. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
