Scope and Content Oak Café, the New Picture House, No 56 Princes Street, Edinburgh The New Picture House, Princes Street, opened in 1913 as an elaborate cinema complex offering 'a refined form of entertainment' to Edinburgh's public. This photograph of the cinema's Oak Café was taken in 1914 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The 'downstairs' Oak Café was designed in the style of a country cottage with oak panelling and an arrangement of plates around the walls. Two of the tables, decorated with flowers and set out for tea, may have been specially arranged by Lemere. The distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere (1864-1944), very seldom included any figures in his photographs. He also spent a great deal of time moving furniture and ornaments until the composition of the photograph was right. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
