Scope and Content Tea Room, the New Picture House, No 56 Princes Street, Edinburgh The New Picture House, Princes Street, was opened in 1913 by Provincial Cinematographic Theatres as one of their new 'refined' cinemas. This view of a tea room, one of two within the complex, was taken in 1914 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The tea room, with its draped curtains and potted plants, was designed to appeal to a 'better class of patron'. The tables, covered with crisp white tablecloths and decorated with flowers, are set out for tea. Some have a cake-stand at floor level. Provincial Cinematographic Theatres' policy was to provide the public with 'respectable' picture houses. These cinemas tended to be small by later standards but had 'refinements' such as tearooms and an orchestra which accompanied the silent films. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
