Scope and Content View from south-east of Seamount Court and Porthill Court, Gallowgate Redevelopment The Gallowgate II phase of development included one, 19-storeyed slab block containing 126 flats, and one 9-storeyed slab block of 72 flats. They were built in 1964 by the Housing Committee of Aberdeen Corporation, and the contractor was W J Anderson. This photograph shows the blocks, with their similar design features. Both blocks have a concrete framework, with rock-faced panels, glass balconies and concrete legs. The open area beneath each block would be used for the storage of refuse. Aberdeen began a programme of multi-storey housing after visits by its Housing Committee to schemes in Roehampton and Glasgow in 1959. The cities main housing problem was long waiting lists, and these were greatly reduced by tower block developments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
