Scope and Content Balcony of the Auditorium, the New Picture House, No 56 Princes Street, Edinburgh The New Picture House, Princes Street, owned by Provincial Cinematographic Theatres, opened in 1913 as 'a refined form of entertainment' for the public. This picture of the auditorium was taken in 1914 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The auditorium, which provided seating for almost 1,000 patrons, had a coffered ceiling and an elaborate plasterwork cornice with roundels at the corners. The balcony was lined with Ionic columns and hung with tapestries. The cinema closed in 1951 with two performances of 'Pagan Love Song', starring Esther Williams and Howard Keel, and 'Cause For Alarm' with Loretta Young. The building was sold to Allied Hotels, and was later converted as a department store. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
