Scope and Content View of the Dining Room, The George Hotel, Nos 19-21 George Street, Edinburgh The George Hotel developed in the mid-19th century on the upper floors of three Georgian townhouses which were extensively remodelled in 1879 by the architects, MacGibbon & Ross. The dining room was photographed in 1910 by Harry Bedford Lemere. The dining room, with its embossed ceiling paper and frieze, is decorated in a typically Edwardian style although the influence of the Art Nouveau style can be seen in the wallpaper and fire inset. The tables display napkins folded into elaborate forms. In the early 1900s heavy embossed papers such as Tynecastle, Anaglypta and Lincrusta were extremely popular. These were inexpensive and some could be painted. Wallpaper friezes were also popular, and could be obtained in a huge range of styles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
