Scope and Content General view of the Pleasance (now known as Muirfield Gate), Duncur Road, Gullane, East Lothian This photograph of The Pleasance, Gullane, was taken in c.1904 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The house was built in 1902 by the architect, Sydney Mitchell, who designed it for his own use. This rather intimate, L-shaped house is harled and tile-hung, and stands behind a sweeping driveway. Its cottage-style exterior is reflected within the house itself, although the architect has combined this with other interior decorative styles. Harry Bedford Lemere (1864-1944) began work in his father's photographic business in London when he was 17. He became one of the most distinguished photographers of his day, working under commission for private owners and architects. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
