Scope and Content Caledonia Works, West Langlands Street, Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire This works was founded in 1840 by Andrew Barclay, a general engineer. The oldest building latterly surviving was built in 1851 and partly rebuilt after a fire in 1876. The red brick office was added in 1908, and the erecting and other shops at the rear were of about the same period. This shows the elevation to North Hamilton Street, with part of the West Langlands Street range of 1851 running off to the left. The glazed enclosure on the roof was Andrew Barclay's observatory. The buildings in North Hamilton Street probably date from the 1850s or 1860s. The works specialised in making colliery and iron works machinery, and industrial locomotives, of which it was the leading maker. It is now part of a larger group, still engaged in railway engineering. The firm has now moved to a new works to the east, and this one awaits a new use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
