Scope and Content Dalgain Lime Works, East Ayrshire In the 18th and early 19th centuries outcrops of limestone were worked wherever they occurred, primarily for agricultural purposes, but also for building, and later for iron-smelting. The application of lime to Ayrshire land transformed its fertility, and especially its suitability for dairy farming. This shows one of a pair of single-draw lime kilns at Dalgain Lime Works, probably established in the early 19th century. The construction of this kiln, with a tall semicircular outer arch, and a lower segmental inner arch, is fairly typical of Ayrshire practice. By 1966 this works had long been abandoned, but the kilns were still in fair condition, and the ramped route of a tramway leading from the limestone quarry to the kiln top was still clearly visible.
