Scope and Content Mauchline Colliery, East Ayrshire This colliery was opened in 1925 by the Caprington & Auchlochan Collieries Ltd and produced house coal. It was purchased in 1935 by Bairds & Dalmellington Ltd. It was linked to the Kilmarnock-Carlisle railway by a private branch line. This shows the boilers which supplied steam to the steam winding engine of the downcast shaft at the colliery. The brick settings of the boilers can be seen, with brick lagging over the tops of the Lancashire boilers, typical of colliery boiler plants. This colliery was closed in 1966, probably owing to declining demand for house coal, large stocks of which were on hand in the colliery in the summer of 1966. The washery was kept on to deal with coal from the Sorn Mine until it closed in 1985. The site has now been cleared, apart from the waste heap. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
