Scope and Content Ballochmyle Creamery, Haugh, East Ayrshire This creamery was established in about 1890 to make dairy products and margarine, then a relatively new product. It was built on the site of a former lint mill. In 1911 the building was substantially enlarged. This shows the creamery from the entrance. The long block at the rear was apparently built in about 1890, and the ones in front, with a Germanic appearance, date from 1911. The fresh, clean appearance was part of the image the owner wished to create. This building was used for experimentation with new types of margarine, and continued to manufacture margarine until after World War II. It then became a spectacle-frame factory, and continued in this role until 1987. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
