Scope and Content Signal Box, Kilkerran Station, South Ayrshire This signal box was at the north end of Kilkerran Station, and controlled the adjacent level crossing and trains using the station. It was of a standard Glasgow & South Western Railway type, but taller than usual. This shows the signal box from the south-east, with, in the foreground, the level crossing at the north end of the station. The train is a diesel multiple-unit of the type used on services from Glasgow to Ayr, Girvan and Stranraer. This train was probably heading for Girvan. When the Glasgow-Ayr line was electrified in the early 1980s, the line from Ayr to Girvan was singled and the service frequency reduced. By that time Kilkerran station had been closed. The manually operated wooden level crossing gates have been replaced by power operated barriers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
