Scope and Content Allanton Colliery (Kingshill No 1), North Lanarkshire This colliery was sunk between 1919 and 1924 by the Coltness Iron Co. and produced coking, gas, house and steam coal. It was one of three collieries in the Kingshill group, the others being No 2, sunk in 1931, and No 3 sunk between 1947 and 1951, the National Coal Board's first sinking in Scotland. This shows the pit-head gear for the downcast shaft, used for winding coal, with the smaller headgear for the upcast shaft to the rear. The chimney served the boiler house for the two steam winding engines. This colliery closed in 1968, but was not abandoned until 1975, as it provided a second shaft for the Kingshill No 3 sinking. The pit-head buildings have all been dismantled. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
