Scope and Content Yorkhill Basin, Pointhouse Road, Glasgow This basin was constructed by the Clyde Navigation Trust in about 1908, together with the quay to the east. These facilities were used largely by the Anchor Line for its services to Canada and the far east. By 1966 these services had ended and the basin was used mainly for shipping whisky to the USA. This shows the basin from the north, with a Houlder Brothers "Beef Boat" at the west quay: the refrigerated general cargo vessel, DUQUESA. An unusual visitor to the Clyde, more associated with London. The transit sheds were the original 1908 ones. This was the first dock in Glasgow Harbour built with an unobstructed entrance from the river. This basin existed unitil 2006 but was only used by warships and other vessels visiting Glasgow. The transit sheds seen in this view had been replaced by larger sheds. During 2006-07, the dockside sheds were demolished and Yorkhill Basin filled in. A New £80 million Riverside Museum is being constructed - opening 2011. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
