Scope and Content Road bridge over River Kelvin, Great Western Road, Glasgow This bridge was completed in 1891, to designs by Bell & Miller, engineers, replacing a bridge built when Great Western Road was first laid out in 1836, and widened in the late 1850s to carry water mains from the Loch Katrine scheme. This shows the underside of the arch at the east end of the bridge, over South Woodside Road. The massive character of the cast iron ribs composing the arch is obvious. The two water main pipes can just be seen, as can the provision made for a third. This was one of the last bridges in Britain to be built with cast-iron arches. This material was probably chosen because it would flex less under the weight of traffic than steel, thus protecting the integrity of the water mains it carries.
