Scope and Content Partick Central Station, Glasgow This station was opened in 1896 by the Lanarkshire & Dumbartonshire Railway, a line sponsored by the Caledonian Railway to extend its Glasgow Central Railway to Dumbarton, serving en route the shipyards on the north bank of the River Clyde, and giving the company access to Loch Lomond at Balloch. This shows the waiting room building on the island platform, with part of the covered stairway to the high-level booking office visible on the right. The station had closed in 1964, but this building was still in fair condition. The goods station to the north was still being used for coal traffic. The prosperity of this station, was badly affected by the electrification of the Glasgow tramways in 1901-2. and by competition from the Glasgow Subway, which opened in 1895. This station was renamed Kelvin Hall in about 1959. This building was demolished in 1969. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
