Scope and Content Caledonian Distillery, Haymarket, Edinburgh This distillery was established in 1855 by Graham Menzies & Co, owners of the Sunbury Distillery, about 1.6km to the north, to make grain whisky using a Coffey still. It was the first purpose-built distillery of its kind and the largest distillery in Scotland. It became part of the Distillers' Co Ltd in 1884. This shows the distillery from the north-west, photographed from a train on the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway. The large block to the right is the maltings. Below the tall chimney is the still house of 1855, still in use in 1966. This distillery was closed in 1987, though the maltings in this view had been demolished some years previously. The site has been redeveloped for housing, retaining the shells of some of the warehouses. The still house has also been retained, and awaits conversion. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
