Scope and Content Bowling Station, West Dunbartonshire The first railway to reach Bowling was the Caledonian & Dumbartonshire Railway, opened in 1850, which ran from Bowling to Balloch. A through route to Glasgow was opened in 1857 by the Glasgow, Dumbarton & Helensburgh Railway, which absorbed the Caledonian & Dumbartonshire. This shows the building on the Glasgow-bound platform. This is of a standard North British Railway pattern, and was rebuilt in 1881 after its predecessor was destroyed in a fire. The line through Bowling was electrified in 1960. This building, which was probably on the site of the Glasgow, Dumbarton & Helensburgh one of 1857, was demolished in the 1970s, and replaced by a small modern structure.
