Scope and Content Library, Glasgow School of Art, No 167 Renfrew Street, Glasgow The library of Glasgow School of Art is regarded as one of the finest rooms in Glasgow. This striking view, taken in 1910 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, records the original fittings, furnishings and arrangement of the room. The library is of double height with a gallery. The windows run through its entire height, and the use of dark timber gives it a decidedly Japanese character. Its layout is formed by a series of posts which rise to meet the beams supporting the gallery. The Glasgow School of Art, designed by the architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, is his most celebrated building, and the library, a quiet sombre space conducive to study, is considered as his 'masterpiece within the masterwork'.
