Scope and Content View of the Staircase in the East Corridor on the first floor of the Glasgow School of Art, No 167 Renfrew Street, Glasgow The east staircase of the Glasgow School of Art was added to the School by the architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, during the second phase of building in 1907-9. This photograph, taken in 1910 by Harry Bedford Lemere, shows its unusual construction. The surface of the staircase is of hard cement, finished to give a polished surface. The corbelled newel is considerably wider at the top than at the bottom, and the balcony rail on the half-landing above has a metal strap pierced in a Japanese style. The staircase, added to the outside wall of the old Board Room, cut down the light from the room's west window. Mackintosh used opaque glass in the window to allow the effect of shadows of people moving on the stairs to be enjoyed from within the room. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
