Scope and Content Detail of communal garden slab, Hutchesontown-Gorbals Comprehensive Development area (CDA), Area 'C', Glasgow Hutchesontown-Gorbals CDA, Area 'C' was designed by the architect Sir Basil Spence (1907-76) approved in 1960, and built 1962-6. It comprised two 20-storeyed slab blocks of 400 flats. The building had prominent balconies and curving concrete supports. This photograph shows one of the double-height garden slabs which are cantilevered at each end of the tower blocks. These areas were designed for drying washing, and as shared garden areas for residents. The concrete forms a long shelf along the balcony. Basil Spence saw these areas as the modern equivalent of the tenement back court, or 'backs', where people used to meet to do their washing and dry clothes. He is quoted as saying that on washdays the building would look 'like a ship in full sail'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
