Scope and Content View from west of Area 'C' of Hutchesontown-Gorbals Comprehensive Development Area (CDA), Glasgow Sir Basil Spence (1907-76) designed these two linked and one single slab blocks as part of Queen Elizabeth Square. They were built in 1962. The design owes much to the influence of Le Corbusier's Unite d'Habitation which Spence had seen in Marseilles. This photograph shows the huge blocks of 400 maisonettes with double-height balconies, for hanging out laundry. Central corridors acted as 'streets in the air'. The sweeping pylon legs can also be seen supporting the structure. The Gorbals had been established as a fashionable New Town in 1780, but housing deteriorated, until the large dwellings had been divided into tiny flats, with very poor living conditions. Tower Blocks were seen as a modern answer to housing problems. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
