Scope and Content Eastfield Engine Shed, Glasgow This depot was completed in 1904 by the North British Railway to provide up to date facilities for handling the locomotives working on mainline services out of Glasgow, and local freight and suburban services. It replaced cramped provision in Cowlairs Works. This shows a breakdown crane at the depot, built in 1907 by Craven Brothers Ltd, Manchester for the Caledonian Railway. This crane was out of use in 1966, but was typical of the smaller breakdown cranes used until the 1960s. All running sheds of any size had a crane of this type for emergency use. This shed remained in use after the end of steam traction in 1968, as a diesel locomotive maintenance depot, and new buildings were constructed for that purpose in about 1970. These have now been demolished, and the site is now used partly as a permanent way depot, and partly for stabling diesel trains. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
