Scope and Content Lugtown Signal Box, East Ayrshire This signal box is on the Glasgow, Barrhead & Kilmarnock Joint Railway, built by the Caledonian and Glasgow & South Western Railways and opened in 1871. Lugtown was the junction for the Beith branch, opened in 1873, and in 1888 a link with the Lanarkshire & Ayrshire Railway was also formed. This shows the signal box at the station, which was built, probably in the early 20th century, to control the junctions in the vicinity, as well as traffic through the station. The projecting central section, to give the signalman a clear view along the track, is a late feature. Though passenger services on the Beith branch ended in 1964, and the line between Lugtown and Neilston High closed in the same year, Lugtown Station remained open until 1966. The box is still there, controlling a passing loop on the main line. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
