Scope and Content Railway Station, Station Road, Ayr, South Ayrshire This station was established in 1856 by the Glasgow & South Western Railway, when the Ayr & Maybole Railway was opened. It replaced the original Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway station at Ayr Harbour, opened in 1840. The 1856 station was rebuilt in 1886. This shows the station from the north, with the Station Hotel in the background. The train is standing in one of the two through platforms for trains to and from Girvan and Stranraer. On the right is one of the diesel multiple-unit trains used on Glasgow-Ayr services. This station is still in use, though part of the platform awnings have been removed. The line to Glasgow has been electrified, but services to Girvan and Stranraer are still operated by diesel multiple-unit trains. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
