Scope and Content Montgomerie Pier Station, Ardrossan, North Ayrshire This station and pier were opened in 1890 by the Lanarkshire & Ayrshire Railway, a subsidiary of the Caledonian Railway, which was built to give the latter access to Ayrshire, and particularly to the port of Ardrossan for the shipment of coal and iron, and for excursion traffic to Arran. This shows the pier, with the station at the end. The timber projections at the end of the pier are the steamer berths. The pier is built of mass concrete, a material much favoured at the time. The pipelines were presumably installed in connection with oil traffic to the nearby Ardrossan Oil Refinery. This pier and station were used to a limited extent for excursion traffic until 1966, when the station was closed, and steamer services concentrated at the Glasgow & South Western Railway's Winton Pier. The Montgomery Pier station building was demolished soon after closure. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
