Scope and Content Howden's Works, Nos 191-7 Scotland Street, Glasgow This works was built from 1897 for James Howden & Co Ltd, engineers who had previously occupied, in succession, two works at the east end of Scotland Street. Howdens had developed a reputation for marine engineering and boilermaking. This shows part of the works from the north-east. On the left is part of the offices, then the works entrance with two gate-houses, both with upward extensions, then two bays of workshops. The gap in the frontage is the playground of Scotland Street School, and there is a modern workshop beyond. The buildings seen here were designed by Nisbet Sinclair, engineer, and by Bryden & Robertson and Dykes & Robertson, architects. The firm was by 1966 engaged largely in making heat recovery apparatus for power stations. They closed the Scotland Street works in the mid-1990s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
