Scope and Content Saucel Mills (Watermill Hotel), Bladda Lane, Paisley, Renfrewshire These mills are on an ancient site, where the White Cart Water flows over a ridge of hard rock. They were rebuilt in 1868, retaining much of the fabric of an earlier building, with two low-breast waterwheels, each driving three pairs of stones. This shows the mills from the north-east. The mills proper are in the centre, with the kilns at the end. The chimney on the end of the building probably served the pea girdle, used for roasting peas before grinding to make pease meal. The Saucel Iron Works is in the left background. These mills belonged to James Snodgrass, who gave up the business in 1967 and sold the buildings for conversion to an hotel, known as the Watermill Hotel, by the Stakis Group. The hotel is still in use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
