Scope and Content Saucel Mills (Watermill Hotel), Bladda Lane, Paisley, Renfrewshire These mills are on an ancient site, where the White Cart Water flows over a ridge of hard rock. They were rebuilt in 1868, retaining much of the fabric of an earlier building, with two low-breast waterwheels, each driving three pairs of stones. This shows the back of the mills from the south-east. The mills proper are on the right, with the kilns on the end of the milling range. In the centre is the granary, and on the left is the shop for selling the products of the mill, and the office. These mills belonged to James Snodgrass, who gave up the business in 1967 and sold the buildings for conversion to an hotel, known as the Watermill Hotel, by the Stakis Group. The mills retained until closure a pea girdle used for roasting peas to make pease meal, a Renfrewshire speciality. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
