Scope and Content Detail of specimen third-floor window and recess, Nos 355-429 Eglinton Street, Glasgow Alexander 'Greek' Thomson designed Eglinton Street, which was built between 1856 and 1860. The whole block was developed at one time to a single design, with linked decorative features. The block was demolished in 1980 after becoming unsafe. This photograph shows one of the windows on the third floor of the tenement. It is flanked by recesses with carved flowers called anthemia set in them. An incised pattern runs below the recess. This window design ran the whole length of the block. The architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson (1817-75) made his name by using many decorative features inspired by Greek architecture. These tenements featured anthemia, disc friezes, incised patterns and an unusual concave corner bow at the north corner. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
