Scope and Content View from north of Nos 355-429 Eglinton Street, Glasgow Built between 1856 and 1860, Eglinton Street was designed by the architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson. The whole block was purchased and tenements erected to a single design, with linked architectural features. The block was demolished in 1980. This photograph shows the corner of the block with its unusual concave corner bow windows on three storeys. There are decorative carved details of anthemia and incised motifs around the windows and in friezes. Alexander 'Greek' Thomson (1817-75) was famous for his use of design details inspired by Greek architecture. This tenement design was particularly interesting for its elaborate decorative scheme applied over a large block. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
