Scope and Content View from north-west of Nos 592-6 Gallowgate, Glasgow Tenements were built in huge numbers in Glasgow in the 19th century, and varied enormously in design and standards of accommodation. They generally consist of several flats of one or more rooms, reached by a common stair. This photograph shows a block of four-storeyed tenements, with a variety of shops on the ground floor. The windows have pediments and there is a cornice at the wall-head. The block is derelict, and part has been demolished. Many tenements were criticised after 1914 for their slum conditions, and were demolished to make way for the tower blocks of the 1950s and 1960s. In more recent times some tenements have been restored to modern standards, and given a new lease of life. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
