Scope and Content View from north-west of Smith Terrace, Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire Smith Terrace, along with Millar Terrace, was built between 1875 and 1877 by the Glasgow Working Men's Investment Trust and Building Society for local coal and steel workers. This photograph shows the cottages from the north-west. There is a lower dwelling accessed from ground level on the other side, and an upper level dwelling which is reached from the stair seen here leading to two individual doors. These types of cottages allow several families to live closely together whilst retaining separate entrances. Two level cottages with gardens and external stairs are often found in Edinburgh from an earlier date, and there they are known as 'colonies'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
