Scope and Content General view of Great Western Road, Knightswood, Glasgow Knightswood was the third and largest housing scheme to be built by Glasgow Corporation between the two World Wars. The layout of this garden suburb was designed by John Bryce in 1921. Thousands of two-storeyed cottages were built between 1923 and 1936. This photograph shows a row of semi-detached cottages of two designs, one with a central gable at the wall-head, the other with ground-floor bay windows. Both types have cement-rendered walls which have been painted in pastel colours, and private gardens. Glasgow Corporation bought an area of land from the Summerlee Iron Company in 1921, which had been used for iron and coal workings. The housing scheme which was built on this site is laid out in crescents and circuses, with tree-lined roads. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
