Scope and Content View from north-east showing the demolition of Bavelaw Street, Garthamlock, Glasgow Bavelaw Street was built during the 1950s, as part of the many housing schemes established on the outskirts of Glasgow. From 1980 Glasgow District Council began to demolish or renovate some of these areas which had become run-down or had social problems. This photograph shows a three-storeyed tenement being demolished in 1981. The water tank, internal divisions and doors can be seen in the rubble. Behind this can be seen five-apartment terraced cottages, the nearest blocks having boarded-up windows. Some areas of relatively modern housing are demolished when it is decided that the buildings are uneconomic to renovate. Sometimes an area's social problems are made worse by the specific type of housing found there, and new developments are constructed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
