Scope and Content View from south-west of engine room, Gate Battery, Flotta, Orkney Islands Gate Battery was built during World War II to cover Swither Sound from motor torpedo and other fast moving boats, to stop them entering Scapa Flow. This shows the engine room on the north side of road to the north of Gate Battery. The three openings are for the engine radiators. Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
