Scope and Content View from south-west of gun emplacement, Neb Battery, Flotta, Orkney Islands Neb Battery was built during World War II as part of the defences of Scapa Flow to defend against motor torpedo boats and other fast moving craft entering through Cantick Sound. This shows the twin six-pounder, quick-firing gun emplacement with its overhead cover. The circular plate with bolts secured the gun pedestal while the rails around the rear once mounted the ammunition trolley. Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
