Scope and Content General view of Neb Battery from No 2 gun emplacement of Gate Battery, Flotta, Orkney Islands Neb and Gate Batteries were built during World War II as part of the defences of the Cantick Sound entrance to Scapa Flow, to prevent hostile motor torpedo boats and other fast moving craft entering Scapa Flow. This view, taken from No 2 12-pounder gun emplacement of Gate Battery shows the twin six-pounder, quick-firing gun emplacement with its director tower. The top observation post directed the gun while the lower one directed the searchlights. Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
