Scope and Content Interior detail of magazine, Buchanan Battery, Flotta, Orkney Islands Buchanan Battery was part of the defences of Hoxa Sound, the main entrance to Scapa Flow. It was built during World War II to defend against motor torpedo boats and other fast moving craft. This shows an interior view of the vent opening above the door to the Nissen hut-style magazine or ammunition store for the twin six-pounder quick-fire battery. Remains of a light fitting can be seen in the entrance. Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
